To the bullied and the Beautiful
"You built a cast around your broken heart and signed it yourself, 'They were wrong'..."
I choose this quote because i like how Koyczan explained that everyone has to heal themselves. Even with a strong support system the only person who can truly heal the internal wounds is yourself. The way Koyczan worded the phrase with physicality helps connect and add a deeper meaning to the big idea of his spoken word poem. It reminded me of elementary school when all of the students would rush to sign a peer's cast in order to show sympathy. Although now that we are older the support and sympathy of our peers is not enough of an impact to write on the cast around our hearts. Almost as if their signature would not show up. Making the decision up to us to have enough self love to sign our own cast and heal from within. The phrase "They were wrong" is powerful because it makes me think of the suffering endured that breaks hearts. I think this poem is also hopeful because after the heart is mended and the cast is taken off the heart is now bigger and stronger then before. This signifies that even if a person is hurt if they continue to love and let love into their heart they will not only mend their brokenness but also become emotionally stronger and better from the process.
