I
thought it was interesting how Bostrom compared human existence and the history
of the universe- explaining the ratio of one year for the universe would equate
to about ten minutes for a human. I don’t completely agree or disagree with
Bostrom’s statements that humans are creating computers that will learn and
become smarter than us, I think it is interesting how he believes computers
will become so highly programmed that they will not stop at learning what humans
already know. I enjoy and can see the perspectives from both sides of the
argument- Yes, we as humans have our strengths, but I think human mind
and body is losing more and more ground to computers. Which can be programmed to
do radically new things in a very short span of time and while its hardware may
be lacking in some areas, it can also be upgraded with relative ease. Our minds
as of yet are not capable of such leaps or enhancements, and thus more and more
jobs are replaced with machines and computers. On the other hand I understand
that humans are the ones who give the power to the machines by programming the
computers to do what they want. Computers also have glitches in their hardware
where a human can understand the problem more complexly and naturally. As
Bostrom goes on to talk about the history, significance and potential of artificial
intelligence it is easy to understand his theory of computers being humans “last
great invention” meaning that if technology is used correctly humans will not
have to put forth much effort in order to achieve their goals.
