A Brief Introduction
Dear Reader,
At the beginning of this year I did not know what to expect
for my senior year of high school English and over
this course I have grown as a writer and learned more than I expected. This
course taught me how powerful language can be and how it can be used to link
individuals through the story telling of the human condition. I’ve acquired new
skills that will be useful in future college courses and have applied the
things we review in class, in my writing pieces. For example a useful technique I learned to use in my advantage has been summarizing.
This taught me how to quickly and effectively find the main idea and key points
of an article in order to make it into a thesis. I have learned to narrow down
an argument and analyze supporting evidence with much more ease than before.
This new skill will allow me to quickly organize and express my by breaking
down the argument into the most basic information.
In the past I have
not been able to connect English classes outside of school but in this course I
was able to make that connection. This was because we worked extensively on strategies
for reading literature, formatting different genres of
writing and writing college essay prompts. A main
difference between past English classes and this year is I have learned to
be a more independent learner and writer. I appreciated that I could consult my
friends for help to revise a paper or ask for different ideas instead of a
teacher like in the past. Interacting with students and sharing personal
thoughts is something that I was slightly uncomfortable with before this
course. Now I am fully comfortable sharing my opinions and feelings with during
class discussions and in my writing. As a result I will be a better person,
scholar, and writer.
I am genuinely appreciative for all the things that I have
learned in this class. The benefits of this course are obviously plentiful in
terms of academics but also in terms of life after high school. I would like to thank my English teacher, Mrs. Honaker,
for providing an exciting classroom environment that balances creative freedom
and educational necessities. I really
enjoyed being in her class and I feel like I learned valuable information that I
will take with me beyond my college career.
Sincerely,
Marywilla Foy
