20 Time Project: The Boo Review
The Boo Review is a blog we created to share information and experiences about alleged paranormal activity in Virginia. Virginia’s one of the oldest states with a longstanding history. So if anywhere’s going to be haunted it’s here.
As our project progressed, so did our blog and the content that we posted on there. We dug deep into the history of several different notoriously haunted places and things in Virginia and posted our findings as “Anomaly Spotlights”. These blog posts were all about understanding why these places or things came to get their spooky reputations. They include witness stories, detailed history on the anomalies, and our opinion on whether the spooky reputation could actually be true or if it's more likely to just be exaggerated rumors.
In addition to this, we actually went to a couple of known paranormal hotspots in Virginia to see if we could prove, disprove, or experience the paranormal activity ourselves. This is where the review in the Boo Review comes in. Essentially, we traveled to local haunted places to see first hand whether they live up to their spooky reputation. After we visited the locations, we posted light-hearted and honest reviews of the place and our experiences there and then gave them a 1-5 ghost rating on our "Boo Scale" based on our firsthand experiences. This included things like comparing our photos taken at the actual location to photos posted online, analyzing the history of the place and seeing if our experiences matched up, and sometimes even conducting investigations at the locations and posting vlogs of those experiences.
So really, the goal of this project was to just understand a bit more about the unexplained world. By the end of this project, I believe that we had certainly accomplished this. But originally we had even bigger plans for this project. We planned to post weekly anomaly spotlights, bi-monthly interviews with people who had first hand paranormal experiences, visit a location every month, post multiple vlogs, and much much more. Heck, we even planned to get t-shirts made. But there was one thing about this project that we forgot to consider- time. The three of us are split between two different English classes, all have extracurricular activities or work after school, and have completely different schedules. It seems like the only thing harder in this project then finding evidence of the paranormal was finding the time for all three of us to work on it together.
But in the end, it all worked out. We had to collaborate with each other and plan ahead to get things done, which are valuable life skills that will help us get ahead in the real world. We also had to realize that maybe we had set our goals a bit too high and they were unattainable for us to accomplish, and it was okay to step back and reevaluate those goals.
What we took away from this project was learning to commit to something and see it through to the end, despite any challenges you may face. We learned how to design and set up a website, create logos, make a website show up on search engines, how to edit videos, and how to do in depth research on a topic. But the most important thing we learned? We learned how to work together.
